As Covid-19 Clobbers Tourism, Millions Lose a Lifeline

CANCÚN, Mexico—Since this after-sleepy stretch of Mexico’s Caribbean coast began its transformation into a glitzy vacation resort community 50 years in the past, it has thrived by attracting thousands and thousands of vacationers in the course of its summer time and winter season seasons.

These days, however, there are extensive stretches of deserted seashore. Resort occupancy has fallen below 30%. Browsing malls are vacant. And the tourism business that assisted pull Cancún and its individuals out of poverty and set them on a more affluent route is having difficulties.
