British regulator brought in to sort out German watchdog

Germany has tapped Mark Branson from Swiss money regulator Finma to head its beleaguered money watchdog Bafin, the finance ministry reported on Monday.

Mr Branson, a British-born mathematician with Swiss and British citizenship, will take up the new put up “in the middle of the calendar year”, the ministry reported.

He will triumph Felix Hufeld, who was sacked in January about Bafin’s failure to avert the Wirecard fraud – Germany’s most significant accounting scandal in residing memory.

Mr Branson will be charged with utilizing reforms introduced in February built to allow the regulator to detect fraud far more promptly and correctly, with a bigger concentration on whistleblowers.

With Mr Branson “at the helm”, the regulator will go on with the reforms aimed at providing it “far more teeth”, finance minister Olaf Scholz reported.

Mr Branson, fifty two, has been head of the Swiss money marketplace regulator Finma since 2014, possessing joined in 2010.
