Red chilli prices turn hotter as pent-up demand surfaces

There is a sudden spurt in the charges of chillies in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Stories say that a quintal of the spice is becoming sold at ₹17,400, which is nearly double than what it was five-6 months ago.

Since the harvest period is months away, the sudden spurt in charges is attributed to the gradual opening up of offer chain sector immediately after a prolonged lockdown shut markets for months.

“There has been a pent-up desire as the markets were shut for months through the lockdown period. Export channels far too are opening up immediately after becoming shut down for months,” M Ramesh, a farmer from Khammam, informed BusinessLine.

Change from cotton

The farmers are in the method of sowing the seedlings for the current kharif period. A very good range of farmers are sourcing the seedlings from nurseries at ₹2-3 a piece. “Some cotton farmers, far too, are shifting to chillies encouraged by very good charges. Unabated rains in the past number of weeks led to water logging ensuing in damage to cotton crop in a number of spots,” P Ramesh, a farmer from the Warangal Rural district, explained.

Even though Telangana farmers grew the spice on two.10 lakh acres, their Andhra Pradesh counterparts grew the crop on 3.45 lakh acres.
